William (Bill) Mercer

Medical Device Development and Commercialization Expert

Career Highlights

Bill Mercer is a seasoned professional with extensive experience in the medical device and biotechnology sectors. He currently serves as an Advisor to cTRL Therapeutics. Bill advises organizations on developing medical devices for cell and gene manufacturing, as well as blood banking applications. He is a member of the Rotman Management School’s (University of Toronto) mentoring program named Creative Distruction Lab (CDL). He is also engaged with Cal Poly undergraduate biomedical engineering program. Bill retired from Terumo BCT in 2015 after a distinguished 28-year career, during which he led business teams in developing innovative medical devices for blood banking, cell therapy, and therapeutic apheresis. His work included the development of cell collection, processing, expansion, washing, and storage systems. Bill also served as a Non-Executive Director for Applied Science Inc. and Key Biologics LLC.

Throughout his career, Bill has been instrumental in driving commercialization strategies to achieve market-leading positions, targeting key customers such as academic centers, biotechs, and contract manufacturing organizations (CMOs). He has coordinated various functions, including scientific, clinical, regulatory, and technical aspects, to ensure the success of these initiatives. Bill's global experience is highlighted by his six-year tenure in Hong Kong, where he led commercial efforts in Asia. He has held various executive positions responsible for global business units and strategy development, and has developed a global clinical network in hematology, immunology, and transfusion medicine. Additionally, Bill has been involved in two public-private partnerships, serving as a non-executive director of TransBio, focusing on biomarker innovation for inflammatory diseases and cancer, and helping another group raise $25 million to develop cell therapy manufacturing.
